Have you ever seen 1 million mosquitoes in one place?

A recent Facebook post from experts in Florida is getting a lot of attention.

The Lee County Mosquito Control District showed pictures of a trapping project it did on Sanibel Island last summer in one part of a neighborhood.

In 1958, the Florida Legislature set up the control district. It was part of a bigger plan to stop mosquitoes from spreading diseases, which can be dangerous.

The district says on its website that it will “monitor adult mosquito activity in Lee County every night from May to October and start adult control operations when surveillance thresholds are met or mosquito-borne diseases become a threat to Lee County residents.”

Mosquito control efforts present unique challenges in the Sunshine State. The salt marshes and wetlands in Lee County are some of the best places on Earth to find a place to live. And the control district says it has to work within “a complex regulatory framework” of local, state, and federal laws that say how mosquito control can be done safely.

The Florida Department of Health says that there are more than 80 different kinds of mosquitoes in the state. Compared to the 3,500 species that live in the world, that’s not much. But the state says that some of the mosquitoes in Florida can carry and spread diseases that can hurt people and animals.

Over time, Florida has seen chikungunya, dengue, Zika, West Nile fever, and encephalitis, among other diseases spread by mosquitoes.
