These cute little flying squirrels are known for their big cartoon eyes, tiny bodies, and extreme cuteness.

These cute critters are found in Japan (Japanese dwarf flying squirrel) and around Europe (Siberian flying squirrel).

The Japanese dwarf flying squirrels only live on the Japanese islands of Honshu and Kyushu. These animals come out at night and live in evergreen forests and alpine forests.

They are very small, only up to 20 cm long, and their tails can be up to 14 cm long.

This makes it hard to find them, especially because they look like trees and blend in with them.

We need to clear this up,  these squirrels don’t fly, they glide.

They like to eat seeds, fruits, and leaves the most. And they hang out in the cracks of trees all day.

Although spotting them is a rare sight, their population is abundant and their population is not a concern.

Now, these little guys aren’t Japan’s only flying squirrels. On the other side of the country lives the Siberian flying squirrel.

Locals call them “Ezo Momonga.” They are the same size as the Japanese squirrel, but instead of being brown, they are gray.

The Siberian flying squirrel lives from the Baltic Sea to Siberia in Northern Europe.

The species is so old that it inhabits Japan now because it was there back when Japan was joined to Siberia before it broke off to form the island we know now as Japan.

These cute animals also come out at night and nest in places like woodpecker holes.

The way they act, what they eat, and how they look are all very similar.

Their cartoon-like features have made them fan favorites in Japan!
